Broadjam Artist: Chet Nichols
Song: Old Friends [Band Ver] (#1 Folk-Contemporary)
Reviewer: R T Hall
Positive Comments: I like the tune. My first instrument is piano, so I like the involvement and flow of the instruments. I can hear a Tom Waits influence (but the voice here is much better). I get beat up a lot about length of my tunes, but I feel if the story requires it, the song will stand.
Constructive Comments: I am a lyricist, so that is the first thing I hear. This lyrics have some good imagery, but are a little disconnected to me. “Mellow like children and old wine”, to me, would be better served with another object and old wine. The story is a little disconnected also with the thought introduced later in the song as this may have been an old lover as opposed to an old friend, I feel this could be a little more concise. You left me with a lot to think about (something I do in my songs). I always listen a song twice, and during the second listen I was a little put off by the vocal exercise, I do not feel it fits the mood of the lyrics. Please do not be put off by the length of this review, I find the longer the review the closer to the mark, and I like this song. Keep up the good work!
