Broadjam Artist: Kate Carpenter
Song: Country Christians
Reviewer: Peter Boynton
Positive Comments: Very good production quality.Good arrangement.Vocals are great.Very hooky, catchy hook line and title.Kind of a throw-back ‘Hee Haw’ vibe.
Constructive Comments: -I had to think about this for a while and admit I’m still not sure what’s going on.-The song has such a fun, 60’s, kitschy vibe and groove that at first I was sure it was a ‘Saturday Night Live’ type of spoof. I had fun with the playfulness of it and could see a skit showing ‘country christians’ doing un-christian things.-Then I got worried, and thought, no, no – this must be sincere. There is no ‘wink wink’ in the lyrics that I can see. At that point i thought it might be be tough to get away with a song spoofing do-goody Christians. -Then I didn’t know what to think! I truly was waiting for the other shoe to drop and had to review the lyrics again to make sure I didn’t miss something clever that would give me a hint one way or the other.-SO, I’m taking this song at face value, and giving it only a ‘3’ on marketability. I know there is a Christian market, and this song might score well with it. If it helps, I’m a person of faith but NOT a Christian, so I may be way off. In any event, I suspect the Christian market would hear this as a throw-back, 60’s-style song and that might lower its potential. -If this IS meant as a spoof, it might make people uncomfortable unless it’s backed up with a solid comedy sketch, like on SNL. -I wouldn’t consider this a ‘country’ song – it just talks about ‘country christians’.Please excuse me if I am waaay off target. I’ve struggled a bit to understand the intention.
