Song: Gone To The City

Reviewer: Floyd Kelly

Positive Comments: This is a country-style song reminding me of days gone by living in Texas. This seems to be a traditional song of men and women in yearning for love – in this case about a man wishing his woman a welcome home from the city for a chicken fry, some cowboy hats and good old-fashioned fun things.

Constructive Comments: I was disappointed when this song first played, as I chose “Classical – Classical” think I was going to hear a classical piece of music, and instead got a country song. I deducted marks because of that. Production-wise, the volume seems to be lower than normal and the vocalist seems to be too far back in the mix. This seems to a traditional-sounding country-style song. I gave this mostly neutral marks because like I said, I was hoping for a classical piece of music. There is a good vibe in the vocalist. I played this twice and noticed a few parts of the lyrics are hard to understand (enunciation) and volume and there are a few pitch problems. Nice violinist playing!

Positive Comments: This is a 24-second piece of differing drums, male tribal vocals, a crowd sound backing and sharp percussion – which seems to be part of a movie scene related to Aztec or Mayan imagery. The piece gets high marks for quality in sound-mixing. I scored this differently than music, as I realize this is movie-specific. Good job!

Constructive Comments: I do not have any negative remarks. I scored this differently, as I know that the media drives the musical elements so it’s not fair to score the same as just music. Once again, good job.

Positive Comments: While sitting here drinking a cup of coffee, trying to wake up, I decided to review some music found in the Unique – Soundtrack department at Broadjam. First up is this 30-second piece which seems to be an introduction to something in a movie. In playing this, I’m reminded of a thrilling movie scene with a doom fable that is being introduced to the watcher/listener. Timpani, horns, backing male vocals provide a thrilling introduction.

Constructive Comments: I can tell this is made for media and the reason it is short. I had to play it 5 times to get the review correct. All the elements are present in relation to quality and sound-mixing is appropriate. I only scored neutral (not negative) because of lack of hook and originality – only because I was hoping for music.

Positive Comments: I love the interplay between the different instruments at the start, including the atonal synth. Very naughty feel to it! It is an awesome length for trailers, cues and title tracks. It stops really well, too – it stops when it has said what it has to say, which is an art not everyone appreciates!

Constructive Comments: None, really. This is whack!!!

Positive Comments: Good use of audio pan! Seems to have gone out of vogue these days, with everything blasting you in the center – good job!The guitar is very pleasant in its tone and playing. The length is good for commercial use.It has various sections, so do point it out when you sumbit it to opps, that this piece can be split into 3 and used independently. Increases your chances. 🙂

Constructive Comments: Would you consider putting lyrics to this? The chords of the song being fairly pop-oriented, and the availability of hooks will allow you to use the same music for at least 2 different songs, one soft and pleasant, the other more hard-hitting in its theme.

Positive Comments: I like how the song keeps moving around. The sax is a lovely touch. When it started I thought this is going to be another guitar-intense song, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Lots of meaningful rests, good use of bass sounds. The violin string pulls were good, too.

Constructive Comments: I personally think the song is longer than it needs to be. In the first two and a half minutes or so, I think the song had already said all that it had to say.Reducing the length will also make it easier to consume commercially, in my experience.

Positive Comments: It’s an ideal length for features / soundtracks / cue moments!I wasn’t expecting that beat, to be honest. Made me sit up!

Constructive Comments: I am not sure what instrument has been used for the constant bass. It is a bit plastic for my taste – perhaps adding more reverb to that track will help? The beat is unexpected, and you can exploit that more, with a build up, perhaps even with violins, so there is a crescendo to the piece. Right now it ends leaving me wanting a bit more.

Positive Comments: There’s a very 80s pop ballad feel to it, I get a Wham! vibe here and there. I like!!!I like that you have given the sax and the guitar equal prominence in the track, which makes it quite fresh.

Constructive Comments: I think a more prominent bass guitar will enhance the melody and add excitement in some parts (e.g. 1:20 to 1:40).The song builds up well, thanks to the strings / keys in the background. At 2:05, consider fully dropping the strings for effect. There’s something I hear behind the guitar – is it a harmonica, an accordion? I find that mildly distracting.
