Do The Monkey ( short version ) by Jeff Maguire

Song: Do The Monkey ( short version )

Positive Comments: This reminds me so much of Edwyn Collins’ Girl Like You. It’s a cool & slinky groove with eerie Farfisa? key parts. Love the tremolo guitar too and the minor groove bass line. Very much an early 80’s Bowie type sound. Now write lyrics for this cool instrumental!!!

Constructive Comments: Now write lyrics for this cool instrumental!!! Overall sound is a bit thin without a lot of bass range and too much high mid? Sounds like it was transferred from tape. This is a totally cool piece.

Just Say No by Blame It On Cain

Blame It On Cain

Broadjam Artist: Blame It On Cain
Song: Just Say No

Reviewer: Jeff Roberts

Positive Comments: This is an album quality cut that could be Motley Crue, Dokken, Billy Idol, G n R, Quiet Riot…who else? It’s got that slamming 1-2 groove that’s danceable as well as heavy, tight guitar & bass tracks with some spankin lead parts, a catchy hook, and the dangerous girl that you want to have theme. This is a totally solid tune well performed!

Constructive Comments: Vocals a bit out of your range on “you’ll regret it” but the real issue is it’s too dry and close, so double the vocal and push it back with some delay/reverb on the chorus. It’s 30 years too late for serious consideration unless you tap into the perpetual head bangers. And maybe you can, they’re out there!

Positive Comments: This song and band has a live natural and very organic feel to it which takes on it’s own life and has a way of sucking you into it. It’s rough in its way but very real, and that is not a joke. Vocalist is somewhere between Waits and Springsteen, with bits of Wilco, a little rough, but honest. In a different era I’d say you had a shot at commercial success, as is I could see this making it into some highly atmospheric spot in film or TV.

Constructive Comments: As above, sometimes the drums seem a little bit loud, maybe some tame them with compression, overall I wouldn’t change it but a remix might tighten up the sound a little.

Broadjam Artist: Ante Novaselic
Song: JaFunktaBlu

Reviewer: Jeff Roberts

Positive Comments: This could be the intro to a Trombone Shorty song. Excellent behind the beat drumming (New Orleans groove) with a great recorded sound, thick & dirty bass lines right in the pocket. Funk guitar with wah that could be a stolen Meters part. And great horns!!! This is world class arranging and playing here.

Constructive Comments: I think it needs a lead horn –sax or trombone totally honking over top with distinctive head motive but this is class work.

Positive Comments: Of course this is Lawrence. Very original tune and good lyrics. I particularly like the keys in this one, and the pad/swells on the dropouts sound really cool. It’s a treat to hear another tune from LW, and this one is cool.

Constructive Comments: First off you know I’m a fan. The guitar lead tone is anachronistic–it doesn’t sound like the period you’re singing about–it’s too overdriven and gritty–it’s Steve Vai when the tune is about Page/Bolan etc. I do like the 2nd lead part that comes but the tone is too harsh. Why not drop the lofi vocals–it’s almost like a mask that you hide behind. Sing it straight out one time!

Positive Comments: Really loved this piece. It reminds me so much of Steely Dan. Great instrumentation and orchestration on this song and the vocals are stellar. Magnificent performance in all areas of this song. Market possibilities for this artist/group are endless. Bravo!

Constructive Comments: The only critique I have on this is that this piece seems to be mixed a little heavier on the high end of the equalization. I would suggest bringing your highs down just a bit. But that is just from my ears…with age, different frequencies in hearing diminish. LOL. Anyhow, we’ll done on this song!

Positive Comments: As the song started I have to say, I thought it was a cover of a song by this guy Cougar Mellemcamp. Thankfully the melody is diffente and is good, as well as the choruses, with good harmonies and main vocal fitting perfect to the soul of the song. very good instrumentations and guitar licks. enjoy this song.

Constructive Comments: no cons except a little for what I wrote above
