Positive Comments: This sounds like Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, Nick Drake, and Greg Lake with just a touch of Bowie too. In other words a cool voice that has paisley 60’s vibe. Intelligent and interesting lyrics throughout.

Constructive Comments: There’s a very poor quality to the overall recording, not just one thing. I think “get the fuck up outta here” is too rough for the overall gentle tone of the tune. Actually same for the rap too IMO. I think this would work best as gentle tune throughout. There are some spots where the strumming rhythm is significantly off the meter–that needs fixing. Some bass would be a big help, and some percussion if not full drum kit. I think there’s a very strong song here that needs a lot of work, but a strong song will pay it back if you do it.

Positive Comments: That lofi half-speed opening reminds me of Sparklehorse (I used to play with Mark Linkous in a band). On the second listen it’s really coming through as a great touch. Then so does the rap that reminds me a lot Gorillaz. Nice doubling work on vocals it adds a lot. The lyrics are excellent, and the white boy voice is working very well (no easy feat with a rap). The soft vocals on the chorus are more dramatic than a loud shout would be. Great drum groove underneath with a sweet high hat sound and work. Disclaimer: I already listened to this tune, and know who it is. Too bad this didn’t make it into the Sons of Anarchy soundtrack–woulda been perfect–it sounds vocally a lot like Matthew James (who did have song in it).

Constructive Comments: I’d drop the lead guitar under the chorus–it’s got kind of a bee in a soda can sound that’s buzzing and detracting from the flow of the chorus which is so strong on its own. I would suggest stronger rhythm guitar with a driven but not too sound. What about staccato strings playing 8ths on the chorus?

The Fire by Calico King

Positive Comments: All fives here…let’s see why: The intro is fan-freakintastic with a moody guitar part that could be Stephen Stills or Radiohead. Super tasty & groovin jazz drums, a languid bass line that is 100% perfect. Then the vocal come in and you sound like Passenger/Jack Johnson but more macho than Passenger and so much more authentically passionate than Jack Johnson. The lyrics are as good or even better than all the rest. AND…it sounds like it belongs on current radio. Cool jam band solo that could be Warren Haines. The almost hip hop phrasing of some vocal passages is way cool. This is THE most ready to be a hit song I think I’ve ever heard on Broadjam, and I’ve reviewed over 2,000 tunes.

Constructive Comments: Find management. This is the shit –if you have at least 15 other songs this good you need to be out there.

Positive Comments: Tremendous passion and Pysch-Folk energy here. It has elements of CSN, Waterboys (especially), Of Montreal, Ween, and others. There’s a lot to communicate here and it’s got a great feel.

Constructive Comments: Right now the recording quality is awful, and you start in the middle of things and don’t give any entry point. It’s really hard to get the gist of what this is about beyond an overall pschizophrenic wash (that’s not a bad thing, it just can’t be the only thing).I’d really be interested to know what you want to achieve with this and what the sound you want is. It could be a tremendous tune if you put the editor’s hat on and mix passion with structure.
