Positive Comments: Oh my!! I would buy this song in a second. The intro is strong and immediately drug me in. Love the drum loop against the funky groove and it just keeps coming. Very VERY creative way of mixing funk/rock with the distorted guitar against the cool Urban drums and vocal vibe. It feels a little bit 80s or 90s but with current sounds and mix, putting the drums out front and the vocal right where it belongs. And then there’s the hint of B3 behind things. That distorted guitar is genius my man! Great mix of odd sounds and vocal things popping in and out throughout. I’m a fan.

Constructive Comments: At about 1:30 it seems to me like he ran out of lyrical ideas for a second and started to free flow, but then it comes back to the hook and it’s great. So hard for me to find negatives about this song. It builds nicely throughout. My only critique, which isn’t really, is that it sounds a bit dated, but to me that’s what makes the track so powerful!

Song: Measure of a Man

Positive Comments: This song comes out of the box sounding like an early Bob Dylan piece, with the folksy guitar and simple, to the point lyric. The writer chooses a less than obvious topic and spins an interesting, albeit somewhat “wordy” lyrical tale around that topic. Keep working on your craft, specifically the lyrics and delivery and I think you are on to something here. It sure worked for Dylan!

Constructive Comments: Lead vocal is a little thin. I noticed slight pitch issues early on, especially in what seems to be the chorus section. The vocal gets watered down during that section. It might help to add some basic backing vocals behind the hook right there. Also there are times the lyrics seem to be rushed, or there are too many words. A combination critique and compliment to you would be that this song, specifically the vocal, shows a great resemblance to Bob Dylan. So if you like his vocals, this song totally works!

Positive Comments: Starts right out sounding similar to Sleepy Jean by the Monkeys. The simplicity of the lyric and music in 1st verse makes this an easy listen. I like the harmony vocals when it hits the hook area. Nice change of pace with the middle section. Also like the chord progression through that section. Unexpected chord changes are cool. I also like the last verse with harmony vocals. Lead vocal is smooth, instrumentation fits the genre. Overall the production is very well done – love your take on the panning of elements in the mix.

Constructive Comments: Not much for me to critique on this one. If there was anything I could add it would be that the hook is a little weak, but it gets there, and the song is solid. Great job with this song. Best of luck!

Positive Comments: Good combination of the Military effects with this moving Soldier’s tune. Nice Harmonica work. The cannon and drums are well produced within the context of the song. Nice licensing opportunity for genres in TV or film that look for something this unique, albeit the Specific lyrical subject may make placement harder. Good on you for creating a unique and moving piece.

Positive Comments: Classic pop? Well, maybe, but more contemporary with a touch of electronica, and done very well! Instrumentally like Roxy Music, the melody like Justin Hayward, but still a feel of dance music from the electronic trance music from the studios at Ibiza. This is pleasing to listen to. Easy to drift into like an afternoon on the seashore. This could fit well on any compilation album of trance electronica or as an album cut from an adult contemporary album.

Constructive Comments: Everything is very well done on this song. Lyrically, it may not beunique (it doesn’t have to!), but the repeats of mesmerise, sympathise work beautifully. I would hold this song up as an excellent track.

Positive Comments: I like the chord progression at the head. Builds nicely. Interesting chord change for a moment after 2:10. Nice, upbeat piano piece. To me this would make a nice filler behind a scene in a movie or tv show where there is action. The overall feel of this song is uplifting and positive, and I expect it will find it’s way into a movie or tv show soon.

Constructive Comments: Slightly dated piano sound. Piano sounds a little stiff at times. I would have liked to eventually hear a melody emerge that a guy could hum or sing along with. Without that, the song tends to meander around a bit without a specific direction. The recording itself is a little low-end heavy for my taste, meaning the piano sounds very full in the low end but when there is a bass note added, it loads up the bottom a little more than I would like to hear.

Positive Comments: Echoing, wistful, and haunting, the memorable melody wails into a tale from long ago and paints a very listenable story from West Virginia. The story matches the tune wonderfully. It’s a different story that isn’t always told and that makes it unique. Instrumentally, the gentle echoes make it sound far away setting the right mood. You’ll drift right into the story. The tune and words are written so well it could be sung with or without an instrument, even hummed. If you can do that, then you’ve written a great song!

Constructive Comments: Here’s an easy experiment for the mix…maybe you’ve tried it! I was wondering how would it sound if there was just half the echo or reverb on the vocals? The instruments have beautiful echoes. Would a bit more clarity on the vocals would give it a feeling of the storyteller telling the story now while the instruments would drift into the past?
