Song: Looking at the face of God

Positive Comments: Very fine work. I like the stutter drum pattern, the keyboard parts are fresh and excellent support. I could hear Phil Collins singing and performing a track of this quality. This melody writer has a great feel for rhythm to keep a melody interesting. Held my attention through the end, and soem four minute songs don’t do that!

Constructive Comments: I am very picky about lyrics. So here is me being picky – First, this song may be a few years old, but I think today, “little girl” to refer to a woman doesn’t come across great. Also, if the singer is driving with the female, why is she the only one who is supposed to notice the homeless or poor and be thankful? Feels a bit like the “little girl” is being criticized, but I don’t know why….Like I said, I get picky about lyrics!

Positive Comments: Strong chorus makes this a real fine song. I like minor key stuff, and melodies that go unexpected places. That first “hush” in the chorus is such a nice choice, musically. I like the idea of adding some interesting instrumentation as the song proceeds. I’m not sure this is the best performance for the song overall, but it’s good enough to show the song’s qualities.

Constructive Comments: On music and performance, this sounds a bit to me like a scratch version, and the final version will be smoother, better mixed. The harmonica sound near the end, for example, is kind of lost. On lyric – it’s just a little creepy at the start! What is going on? Then in the chorus, who is the singer saying “hush” to? I don’t get the storyline at that point. But I enjoy the melody enough, I don’t care!

Positive Comments: What she’s looking for in a man is the theme of this song. Original topic in that she’s looking for someone nice and slow…not a fast mover. Someone who will understand. Nice instrumentation.

Constructive Comments: Shorten the intro. Please post the lyrics. It would really help. Your voice is high and gentle, but in the recording it comes across as…tentative. Too tentative, and not definitive enough for the listener to pick up all the lyrics on the first listen. Maybe bringing up the vocal in the mix would help. Something needs beefing up!

Positive Comments: Definitely a transportation song…it did a great job of transporting me to Mexico with castanets, guitar and a truly romantic vibe. This song has a very sexy and seductive feel to it…one night stand or a fling that all started with a dance. These 3 lines are great lyric writing: My mind keeps telling me I shouldn’t give inYet I can’t stop myself from going againYou are the one who makes my head spin.Another good line about the blood racing.

Constructive Comments: Was that a real guitar or synth? I would have to guess synth. To get a really authentic feel, I would use a real guitar. My apologies if you did…maybe it was an effect that made it sound different. The only thing I would change about the lyrics is “oh so far”. That didn’t sound quite right to me. “Far” appears quite a bit in your song. PS I am glad I didn’t “give in” when I was in Mexico as a teenager. This song really took me back to a dangerous place I am glad I didn’t go!

Positive Comments: This is a really sad song about losing a loved one. The first verse provides a good opening to the story, excellent word pictures with dinner waiting on the stove, a warm hug. The vocal is about as passion and emotion-filled as it gets. You can feel the loneliness in the vocalist’s voice. Background vocals augment this.

Constructive Comments: My guess is that this is a vintage (rough) recording. The song only has 2 verses. It could be improved with a bridge and third verse. “Why’d they take you away?” I was left wondering, who were “they”? Did they take her off to jail? Ah, no I don’t think so. Was she unfaithful and left him? Nope? Baker acted? Sickness, tragic accidental death? Who knows? Fill me in. I’m dying of curiosity. This song does not have a country feel, so I would sing “you” instead of “ya”. Also you make reference to night and in the same and next line you say day and rhyme day with today. I think that could be improved.

Reviewer: Michael Centola (20 Minute Mission)

Positive Comments: A light easy listening pop/rock song. Great acoustic guitar tones pairs well with the singer’s vocals. I enjoyed the doubling of the vocals in a few parts. Added depth and really enhanced the feel of the song. Solid performance and production.

Constructive Comments: Not really much to add or takeaway from the song. You could have a small 15-25 second acoustic guitar solo somewhere in the middle if you wanted to increase the length of the song, or were looking to market the song with just the overall melody. Same goes for an extended intro with the guitar and keyboard. But overall the song is good, changes would only be made if you were looking to market the non-lyric portions.

Positive Comments: The overall vibe of this song is right on point. The vocal fits well with the style, and you’re immediately taken back to another time. Smooth and easy listening for sure!

Constructive Comments: I left “market potential” blank, because the recording is very loose. I’m guessing home recording/mix? Even as a semi-acoustic piece, it needs to be a whole lot tighter to find traction in my opinion. But still an enjoyable tune, especially since I’m from that era.

Constructive Comments: I enjoyed this. It might have potential as incidental music for a film, if you expanded it a bit. Good luck with it.

Constructive Comments: I know you have it listed in pop but I felt it to be more folk but that’s just my opinion. However, I realize your arrangement lends itself more to pop. I’d like to hear the chorus sooner, maybe after the first 2 sections. Overall, nice work!
