Song: Music Man Tonight

Reviewer: rob colley

Positive Comments: A really nice track, with lots of energy and sincerity. I particularly like the way the quite dry recording of the main vocal underlines it without raising it too high in the mix and in general the mixing and production are very intelligent. The song is catchy and fresh, and stands out from the crowd with an unusual crispness to the sound. The musicians are all doing a great job in supporting the lead vocal and backing vocals, and this is clearly a tight band, whom it would be great to hear live.

Constructive Comments: The rhythm section is very well blended in the recording, with no floppiness on the drums or bass. Nice lead guitar too.Just a thought… is there room in here for a change of dynamics and texture at some point? Maybe a drop down and subsequent build up, as might be done in a live version? The section with the backing vocals alone is refreshing, and I wonder whether some more of those textural changes might be possible. Perhaps towards the end, there could be a sudden drop, followed by a crescendo, maybe to a big crashing button ended finish rather than the fade-out? I really enjoyed it as it is anyhow. Thanks a lot. Rob

Positive Comments: Love the wet synth sound to start things off. Great playing and programming, this has an 80s Jan Hammer vibe that could easily be used in a film sequence. Lots of energy and power.

Constructive Comments: When the main instruments kicked in at 0:40 the tonal quality sounded much more retro than current. Hopefully that’s what you were going for.

Positive Comments: Very nice 12-string-ish sound that could easily be found as a backdrop for film/TV scenes. Well performed and recorded. Soothing but with enough motion to remain interesting.

Constructive Comments: If I’m being totally honest, I don’t get the slowdown and false ending at 1:50. Made me think the guitarist lost his place and meant to play another verse. But it was still very enjoyable.

Positive Comments: Definitely Pop, as exemplified by the vocal which is steady and on pitch. Very smooth and calm sound, retro 80s ballad style.

Constructive Comments: I found the cymbal & drum sound inconsistent and don’t know if the lyrics are reflective of 2020, but still a nice tune overall. Well performed.
