Positive Comments: For the most part, I like this piece…you obviously have had much more training than I, so I am reluctant to be too critical…but here goes. This track evoked a lot of medieval imagery for me…lords and ladies, life at court, proud steeds and gallant knights, etc. Great feel and very nice counterpoint, and the instrumentation was excellent. I feel that this could very well have market potential given a few changes.
Constructive Comments: The main thing that struck me more than anything was how this piece would benefit from either a live orchestra (expensive!) or a better sample library such as East West Quantum Leap’s orchestral libraries. I am reminded of (and actually willing to put money on this having been realized on) Emu’s 16-bit orchestral ROMpler). Back when I bought one of these in ’93 or so, the sounds impressed me…nowadays, not so much. EWQL’s products ARE expensive, but a good investment for a composer with your talent, and I feel that the higher quality sounds and particularly the articulations of each instrument would make your work very marketable indeed, especially in the game/AV fields. In addition, the mix sounded a bit flat to me…all the instruments seemed to be the same volume or nearly so, so the main themes got somewhat lost and were fighting with the other parts for the listener’s attention…also, some judicious reverb would have given the sound more depth. All in all, a very promising work! I look forward to hearing more from you.
