The Box KILLER NEW SAX by Margie & Art Corey, S. & A. Corey

Song: The Box KILLER NEW SAX

Reviewer: Kevin Leon Smith

Positive Comments: Excellent tune! Begins by asking a question. Now I feel it necessary to pay attention to find the answer in everything I’m hearing! Lyrics of the human conditioning and it’s audio biography. Great arrangement of fitting each sound to express their own dynamics…nothing over the top.

Constructive Comments: Since the genre is in the experimental realm, keep up the good works!

Positive Comments: Conceptually there’s tons of ambition here. This goes from a crackly 78 on the turntable playing a Rudy Vallee tune to a spanking disco tune, and somehow you got Berard Edwards and Nile Rodgers to sit in!! Let’s face it, disco is a drug that’s irrestible, and I’m addicted to the kick drum, side chain bass jumping sound with jangle guitar and lush Philly strings coming in on top. The bass is freakin’ hot and the funk guitar is spot on. The vocal has an “emcee of doom” vibe, one that would be singing in the Titanic Band. This is dance fever baby!!

Constructive Comments: This is Jimmy no? I think I heard this tune the other day. I don’t the opening scenes gel well with the rest but the Disco is as good as it gets.

Positive Comments: A very nice New Age piece with solid playing and composition. There is a wonderful coda that I love here (and want to hear it as a bridge also much sooner in the song).

Constructive Comments: The break at 3:30 or so is super nice–that should come much sooner, like shortly after 1:45. The piano sound isn’t all it could be but who’s got a Bosendorfer and Abbey Road in the budget? Watch those rolls–that’s easily overdone, and I think you overdo it. I’d avoid that cheesy Rhodes sound, but that’s me.

Positive Comments: This is a really classic tune that has echoes of “On Broadway”, “Pretty Woman” and generally could be a Travelling Wilburys tune. Love the groove and the behind the beat bass line. There are some wonderful touches with smooth key/synth parts, the answering guitar parts working against each other (with great tone), and drop outs/stops. Really excellent arranging and performance here!!

Constructive Comments: I’ll echo previous commentary: It’s out of your vocal range and putting a C clamp on your nads won’t fix that. This needs a vocal that feels comfortable, and your voice can do it but not with this approach. Make it EASY. It’s an easy, wistful tune. What would Jeff Lynne do?

Melinda by Margie & Art Corey, S. & A. Corey

Positive Comments: This reminds me of Seal (with Heidi Klum sitting in). I’d bet this is Ronald… Nice Ibiza dance groove and those backing ooh’s are really cool–it gives a tremendous mood, especially when the whistling synth sound is added in with them. The spoken female vocals add a great haunting touch. Very cool tune!

Constructive Comments: I think the bass section of the arrangement could be fatter & bigger both in terms of the arrangement and the mix–this would add a lot. Maybe treat the vocal to distance it a bit and make it a tad more mysterious?

Positive Comments: Refreshing to hear this song after laboring with two other reviews. Fresh, original. Great pop sound. I can tell that the group spent a lot of time honing the song as I hear some really nice detail in the arrangement. I am very pleased by the details and execution of the song. Hard work paid off and you got my full attention.

Constructive Comments: Well, this is where I am supposed to say something semi-critical. Not here, not now, not on this song.

Song: cupid’s arrow

Reviewer: Jeff Roberts

Positive Comments: A pleasant song that’s well arranged and recorded. Tight instrumental parts all around that are all tasteful and well-executed. This sounds like Decemberists meets Natalie Merchant. Both vocalists have very nice timbre, and there is melody and phrasing that sounds even stronger on the second listen as does the tune generally. Nice work!

Constructive Comments: The high e string is just a tad flat and these chords make it stand out (and yeah acoustic tuning is always a chore). The female vocals are seriously flat–that’s got to be fixed. The male vocal is often flat too. I think the lyrics are a bit cliche –Cupid’s arrow is hard to use anymore and have any freshness.
