Song: Chain of Sin Anthony’s Version

Reviewer: Jeff Maguire

Positive Comments: A lot of interesting and unusual instruments and effects give a western feel to a moody piece reeking of doom and despair.

Constructive Comments: A lot of cool ideas, there’s a few hitches in the flow of instruments, especially around 1:30 that sound like edits. The big criticism to my ear is the effect on the voice which is truly annoying to me. The song is strong enough, and in this kind of song perfect vocal pitch isn’t absolutely necessary .. either way the effect hurt … IMO. And is that a harmonica? If it isn’t it should be, maybe give that a little more prominence.

Positive Comments: Very pretty melody. I like the dynamic in the bridge. Nice harmonies. Unique vocal timber, I like it. Very nice instrumentation. Good luck with this pretty song, it delivers a very good melancholy.

Constructive Comments: The hook is a little weak. I think because the melody line is going down and the delivery is soft and low. The recording sounds a little hollow and I have trouble hearing some of the words.

Positive Comments: This song seems to have just the right structure. I loved the bridge especially. The instrumentation and recording are superb. The lead vocalist has a rich, wonderful voice and the backing vocals are right on.

Constructive Comments: The only criticism I have is that the song seems quite familiar, a common theme and message. But I think its a proven winner, so good luck!!

Positive Comments: Very catchy beat, had me doing a boogie at my desk! Very good instrumentation and recording. Good luck!

Constructive Comments: There isn’t an obvious melody and division of sections which leaves me lost for a hook. The ending seems to be the hook. That said, this would be a great background track for an outdoorsy show.

My Mom Got Sick by Uncle Spider & The Electric Dirt Clods

Uncle Spider & The Electric Dirt Clods

Song: My Mom Got Sick

Reviewer: Jeff Maguire

Positive Comments: Strong Django influence in a minor blues with a Gypsy feel.

Constructive Comments: The melody and the feel is very nice, the style is very familiar. The performance itself has some weak spots. It’s very slow and out of tempo, which can be ok , but a real Gypsy blues like this should probably be quite a bit faster and swing. To my ear this tends to come across as a decent first effort, but it needs some work. You might sell a very slowed down performance like this if the recording was better, there’s a lot of noise, it sounds brittle, and at one point my right speaker just cut out.

Positive Comments: It’s a lovely song. Tremendous guitar, piano and vocal. Great lyrical idea, which is very engaging. Lovely chord sequence. Excellent sound quality. A sophisticated yet accessible song.

Constructive Comments: This might sound stupid but the horn arrangement just sounds a bit too tight. I would have liked a looser horn arrangement, perhaps a trumpet solo,to reflect the random acts of a dog. Maybe I’m nit picking,(no pun intended).
