Song: Old Friends (Solo)

Reviewer: J Edna Mae Thomas

Positive Comments: Love the intro. and the lyrics. Organ lifts the song really well. Interesting chord progressions in the middle – great job. Outro appealing. Structure is clear and succinct, providing a great road map to the listener.

Constructive Comments: Great job but if I had to suggest something, perhaps a few female bv’s might provide another interesting lift, in the same way the chord progressions did in the middle.

Positive Comments: Clear structure, great hook, interesting lyrical concept. Very individual.

Constructive Comments: This is a song well done, but if I had to suggest anything, I might say towards the end of the track, there could be more development of some melodic ideas/hooks.

Reviewer: Black Eye Affair

Positive Comments: I started out skeptical, bit the song really grew on me by the end. I like the energy of your arrangement. It has a great push to it. I enjoyed the guitar parts in the beginning, and then really appreciated how they evolved into the more electronic sound at the end. This is a very marketable tune with a little bit of polish!

Constructive Comments: The vocals could use a little but of tuning, especially in the beginning. The vocal level is perhaps a little too low in the mix, and there are parts where it is difficult to make out what is being said.

Positive Comments: I dig it! Reminds me of Springsteen or John Meloncamp. Has a great vibe, catchy and straight ahead. The lyrics do a great job of evoking a blue-collar, no-nonsense masculinity that is fading fast! This is a solidly put together tune. I enjoyed the hook, and it did its job well. Kudos! This is a very marketable song.

Constructive Comments: The arrangement gets a little bit too busy in the spots where it really builds. There are moments where there is too much going on in the background (I think it’s the organ to which I’m referring) and it takes away from the song. Makes it sound a little bit cluttered at parts.

Song: Out of the Gaze of the Evil Eye

Reviewer: Black Eye Affair

Positive Comments: Great instrumentation! Excellent timing, perfect instrument choice, well executed. Relative levels were all good. Vocals were good quality , easy to understand and on pitch. Hook was catchy. The whole song has a very cool late 60’s early 70’s thing going that I like. The little things like the hand claps and the background vocals really do make a big difference.

Constructive Comments: The quality of the recording is a little bit weak. Low volume, sounds a little bit over processed or too compressed. It may just be the format that it is presented on here. If there is a way to trim the time a little bit, I would. Maybe consider pulling the guitar solo, or editing a verse out to get it about 30 seconds shorter.

Positive Comments: I liked your vocal melody. It was original, but still accessible to the first-time listener. The lyrics seemed good at first listen, and your voice has a cool classic rock tonality that I like. Reminds me of a cross between Bob Seeger and Eddie Money.

Constructive Comments: Instrumentation needs a lot of work. The percussion was distracting and oddly timed, and the sounds chosen for your instruments were questionable. Especially toward the end when the midi saxophone (I think) came in it was way too loud and sounded like something from a cheap keyboard. Overall, the song has good potential. A better recording might take you far!

Song: I Can Always Count On You

Reviewer: Black Eye Affair

Positive Comments: The arrangement combined elements of several styles and created a thing of its own. It was interesting to see the aspects of 80’s synth-pop combined with classical, and even eastern elements. Kudos on thinking outside the box in a genre that can be very cookie cutter. Don’t let the low scores bring you down, I can see in this song that you are a talented individual.

Constructive Comments: The quality of the sounds was not very good. You may want to invest in some better software with an improved sound library. Also, the vocals were pitchy and in need of tuning. Don’t be afraid of some light tuning – Melodyne is your friend. Especially in the pop genre, where it is 100% expected to be tuned to perfection. Structure wise, you need to work on the hook. Maybe shorten it, simplify the melody, and make it more memorable. Keep cooking. It sounds like you have the goods.
