Positive Comments: This opens up sounding very much like Ryan Adams’ “New York, New York”. This sounds better with each listen. Really really strong writing in terms of structure, melody, and lyrics. Very nice vocal performance. I really like the chord lift on the pre chorus–it’s a great setup for the chorus/refrain.

Constructive Comments: Listen closely to Ryan Adams’ “New York, New York” for comparison against a masterpiece. First thing drop the effects on the rhythm guitar and go for nice clean, warm sound, and add or substitute and jangly, strumming acoustic guitar part. I think the bass is too plonk plonk plonk in the verses–it sounds like Boston’s “Long Time”, which was 40 years ago. Having it groove and gently move would add a lot. I’d take most of the slapback off the lead vocal, and put some tube drive and just the tiniest bit of distortion in to give it some grit. There’s a bit too much low mid in the vocal–it accentuates the somewhat nasal tone you have. I really don’t like the solo guitar at all. It’s trying to hard, and putting too much Dickie Betts intensity. And the sound is harsh. Simpler, major pentatonic with a smooth tone would be better. All IMO and all intended to help with the tune. This is really solid writing, playing, and singing!

Old Man by Marc S. Pate

Reviewer: Jeff Roberts

Positive Comments: Of course the first moments call Cowgirl in the Sand to mind…and you turn it around by using an “Old Man” hook. Really good sound and mood are created in the first few bars. The voice is commanding and really pleasing. I like the upward changes in the chorus. This has a very strong late 70’s feel. Super tasty guitar break. This calls to mind Neil Young of course but also Seals & Crofts, Jesse Winchester, Steven Stills, Rodriguez, and Bob Welch. And anyone who likes those will love this. Super work here!

Constructive Comments: Like what? lol

Positive Comments: Great driving beat with an urgent tambourine and chord progression that gives a tragic mood. I can’t quite understand the lyrics but the melody and phrasing work so well I know the lyrics are good. This sounds like Billy Corgan / Smashing Pumpkins if he were a better songwriters.

Constructive Comments: There’s so much chorus on the guitar it makes the sound very thin. The guitar break at 1:57 totally doesn’t fit the song at first but then what you end up with *does* give a strong bridge. The finish of the tune doesn’t match the vibe you’ve created. I think there are a number of things to fix and glue together better but there is a great song here and some really cool things going on. Overall I think the sound is too trebly and the vocal diction needs to be clearer. Some sweet harmony vocals would be a great addition.
