Song: Tommy

Positive Comments: Nice work. The guitar sound fits the voice very well. This is a very good set up. I listen to a lot of singer/songwriter recordings and I am impressed with the choice of guitar for the voice. The guitar moves off a supportive strum to hits easily and appropriately, in my opinion. I enjoy the combination. The lyrics are wonderful in that there are certain hooks that stay with you and make you want to come back and listen to the song again. And as I say below, the last hook “me and you” really is haunting… Thank you!

Constructive Comments: I wish for a different recording of this song. I enjoy it, and there are great things going on in the guitar and I want to hear more of that under the voice. The room tone on the voice is fine and yet my ear is looking for a soft studio reverb or dryer room. For example, when the song gets to the part “me and you”, I so want to hear the interplay between those rich chords and the melody of the vocal. There’s something hauntingly poignant about that line… it stays with you… I want to hear every note, every created harmonic… everything.

Positive Comments: This reminds me of a piece that might have been written by John Dankworth or Laurie Johnson or Howard Blake. It has this 60’s spy adventure feel to it. It grows on you quickly. I expected to hear other instruments, but I heard nothing else entering, and then I found myself settled in and listening to this thing as it hypnotized me. I enjoy this piece! This is an infinitely interesting piece of music. I can totally see this as part of a Fluxus concert (Fluxconcert) with the music of Dick Higgins and Allison Knowles, or Yoko Ono or John Adams… I know that’s a span, but that’s completely what I feel from this! The march through key variation that begins at 1:15 is refreshingly interesting to me…I wonder if ‘classical’ is the right category… maybe this was placed in Avant Garde, and showed up in the general category. I’m a trained organist (pipe organ and B-3) so the voice here interests me… My initial guess is Wurlitzer theater organ stops of some sort? interesting… RAW…

Constructive Comments: I want a big Chinese gong at the end. That would be COOL! But, alas, that is so subjective.I can’t think of anything to add. An organ is such the perfect choice. Not changing the stops is a great idea. Drive, drive… (I’m listening for the 5th time) there’s that key change again. (had to rewind to hear it again). it pulls on you. That’s just weird and unexplainable and wonderful and interesting all together. and then it keeps going. AAAHHH!!! Really nice explosion of raw creativity. No, there’s nothing I would add to this.Except to create a leeeetle more pocket for the bass in the beginning……. and the huge Chinese gong…

Positive Comments: A genuinely beautiful piece which is played with great sensitivity and touch. Lovely change at 0.26. Superb sound quality. The piano tone is exquisite. Not over long, just the right length.

Constructive Comments: If you haven’t submitted this song for appropriate film/TV listings then I suggest you do it now. This tune, (tune sounds a bit humdrum, but you know what I mean) deserves a wider audience. Really excellent stuff.

Positive Comments: The intro makes a big impact. The instrumentation is excellent. I love the electric piano I always do. I like the vocal delivery very much. Great change for the chorus. Melodically superb. A very engaging song. Very clever use of taped effects…children playing, telephone dial etc. Great sound quality.

Constructive Comments: The lyrics are very strong, original and powerful, but ironically that’s why I’ve marked down the market potential in that they are so idiosyncratic that they’re unlikely to appeal to music supervisors who will be looking for generic, formulaic lyrics for film/TV. I love the song however.
