Positive Comments: I enjoy this piece. I like the voicings. AHHHHH!!! at 1:30 this piece opens up and really comes alive. This has the feeling of an improv piece, the more I dive into its complexities…at about 4:50, it takes us down a new path. This feels like a soundtrack for a road trip. Now my mind is trying to decide what the path looks like, and where this road may be… ?…

Constructive Comments: Please forgive me for intruding on your creativity here… at 1:50 this piece just BLOSSOMS! How can you get to this place elegantly, more quickly? The beginning has harmonic progressions that don’t feel a part of this section. Is it just my impatient ear?I leave myself open to whatever the composer puts in front of me. Yet, I also want the ‘familiarity of surprise’. Give me something new, surprise me, and let me not feel yanked off path… Thank you for allowing me to express this. It’s a challenge that I face in my own writing, every day…

Song: The Defeated ( instrumental)

Positive Comments: Soundtrack- styled beginning… the front of a story… what does it tell?… The builds presented sometimes carry you into empty space. One thinks a certain melodic line is a vehicle carrying you somewhere, and then, poof! you’re on your own, floating above the next part of the piece…This is an interesting piece. I would even like to hear this fully orchestrated and played by analog instruments, with voices. That could be tremendously fun.

Constructive Comments: I would pull back the hits a bit in the beginning of mix to give them more gravity. I want to feel their weight… The second percussive voice in the song, the two hits at the very beginning, those have the voicing, and sit in the mix the way I wish the others did. That is confirmed for me when you make the crescendo at 2:00 and then fall into just the upper voices, no bass, for the remainder of melodic line. The emotional gravity you create in this move could be matched by the mix suggestion I made, I believe…Your sensitivity to the dynamics needed to push this piece draw me in. Well thought out. Thank you.

Positive Comments: The hook is infectious… repetitive, persistent, without being intrusive or heavy. The rhythmic hook created by the sweeping right-to-left electronic percussive effect interests me… it’s taken the place of a lower bass line… and then it attacks me at about 3:08, and then the song ends! That’s a nice effect. Thank you for creating this piece. Simple, thought-provoking…

Constructive Comments: At first I was going to speak about desiring a bass instrument, a pad or some sort of lightly-moving instrumental line… but then I began exploring other elements and found that the rhythmic effect that sweeps right to left could replace that for me. It is sometimes difficult to move away from our perceived norms and accept what a composer has offered. I’m glad you kept this simple and straight-forward so that I could come around to that patch in this piece. With that said, would it still be appropriate to lean into a lower pad at the end to expand the exit even more? Hmmm…
