Tell Me What You Want To Hear by John Masarone

Song: Tell Me What You Want To Hear

Positive Comments: Love the drum sound and the guitar parts. The dropout after the second chorus and before the reprise is a really nice touch. This is John–I’ve heard this song before. It’s a class effort and it could definitely be right in there on any classic rock playlist.

Constructive Comments: Please note that this is offered as helpful criticism!!! I commented in the email that I think you’re using your voice well this time. Except for the first verse, you know there’s still a straining quality throughout that is uncomfortable to listen to. You’re making pitch but there’s no room for vibrato or dynamic variation because you’re maxing out your voice. Also, and this is totally an aesthetic preference thing, but I think you’re singing 1985. There’s a very predictable rhythm to the phrasing and the lyrics are very obvious and pedantic in places. If I were producing this I’d get you to sing off the beat, and not start every phrase on one and sing until four. “I’ll sell you down the river” is a great line. And the chorus is really cool lyrically too. I’d bring up the backing vocals–they’re really good.Much of what I’m saying would make more sense if we were hanging out and able to work with lines & parts in real time. This tune by Sloan, “The Other Man”, reminds me a lot of your tune. Have a listen and see if you can take anything useful away? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kslDI0CZlOY

Positive Comments: Beautiful melody and moving performance/arrangement. Very nice rubato created a warm feeling of intimacy. I felt as though I were alone with one other person whose company I enjoy. I listened to it several times and enjoyed it more each time !

Constructive Comments: The string instrument (cello?) and piano are panned nicely to left and right. There is a third instrument I can’t identify (oboe, english horn?). Perhaps it could be panned to a position of its own (closer to center) so that it has it’s own identity? Or perhaps the piano should be panned to center with the other two instruments to left and right? The string instrument could be more prominent (louder/closer) when the other instruments are also playing.

Positive Comments: This is as easy listening country as it gets. Smooth, flawless instrumentation and crystal clear vocals. Great mix and production. The lyrics are clever…plenty of opposites to describe a man who just can’t get over one girl and move on to the next…kind of funny! The play on words really made me smile! This is a very dance-able tune! Obviously this songwriter really knows what he is doing and I am guessing has already had some commercial success.

Constructive Comments: No bridge!Make up your mind already, ha ha.Loved your song!Mrs. Kate

Lonely Woman (from the “Live” CD, “Black & White”) by Chet Nichols

Chet Nichols

Broadjam Artist: Chet Nichols
Song: Lonely Woman (from the “Live” CD, “Black & White”)

Reviewer: Kate Carpenter

Positive Comments: Here’s a live recording of an amazing and creative artist. The long and amazing guitar intro made me think it was just going to be an instrumental song and then…surprise! The passionate, dynamo vocals come in. The song is about a lonely girl. Favorite rhyme: Sings, stings. Direction/perfection. The guitar playing was so great and high-energy, I wish I could see a video of this artist playing this song. I am sure he is a festival favorite. I’d certainly go to see his set! I liked the word picture of “letting her hair down for me.”

Constructive Comments: The length of the song would probably render it a little less commercially marketable (but who cares?). The live recording or mix made it hard for me to discern all the lyrics. But that didn’t change the fact that I was impressed, very impressed! Mrs. Kate

Positive Comments: This is as smooth as smooth blues gets. It’s a song about getting drunk and trying to forget…a sad subject, but it’s portrayed so well. All aspects of this song stand out GREAT: The convincing vocals, stellar instrumentation and flawless production. There are some really great and original word pictures here…the shattered glass, fire in the barrel. Favorite lyric: Smile hurts…never let it show. The bridge is especially well written. The outro/ending is especially nicely executed. Great job!

Constructive Comments: The only part missing in the story is WHY you were so bummed out.
