Broadjam Artist: Katilyn
Song: REIGN
Reviewer: John Walradt
Positive Comments: The heavy lumbering, impending metal guitar sets the ominous tone of a song that means business! Lyrically clever, it begins with the play on words, “For hundreds of years, it’s been reigning men,” and puts forth a womandate, as opposed to mandate! Vocals are superb: smooth but with grit in the right places. This is Pat Benatar meets Judas Priest. It is mixed well with softened background vocals and panning of guitars.
Constructive Comments: Broadjam doesn’t really give a selection for melody so I usually pick between the hook and arrangement. The tune, or hook, is not readily memorable. I would not immediately be able to remember the tune to hum it or sing it. It’s an album cut rather than a single. But make no mistake, it’s marketable because there are specialized videos and ads that want an empowerment theme. The arranged notes of various instruments and background vocals that compliment the tune are placed well. Oh, I have to say I really like the line, “This country is more than fathers and sons.” The theme of angry/insistent feminism, and for very good reasons, has been told for decades, but it doesn’t hurt to re-tell the story. The feminist movement has been the most important movement of all time. It has grown to be inclusive in that it embraces that all persons have the right to a happy, fulfilling life, with equal respect, free of prejudices, veiled social rules, and mind games.
