Song: Best in Me
Reviewer: Jeff Roberts
Positive Comments: Really strong entry with a big country anthem feel. Solid production (I’m sure it’s professional) and performances. Nice warm vocal with compelling “grown woman” vibe.
Constructive Comments: This is a great tune in the making the below offered as helpful criticism.Adding a tambourine track would do SO much this tune.Start the vocals sooner. They don’t come in until :24, and the intro has worn out by then.Way too much dead space between “now you’re gonna see………best of me”The lyric move from “find yourself” to “best of me” is confusing. Is this about a universal quest for self or a relationship song where one party hasn’t appreciated the other. The hook is slow and plodding “best in me” IMO. And there’s way too much space around it. I think the tune really falls flat here. More harmony, a fiddle part? But I think the lyric hook itself needs to have more to it rather than just the short phrase hanging out there.I think you’re running too long here, and your climax out to come before 3 mins and get out by 3:30.I think you need a vocal bridge with an interesting chord change that opens the tune up. And do it after the 2nd chorus. The drums are tight but lacking personality and variety–some extra expression here would add a lot. Same with the bass. Both while still staying in the pocket but make it sound like they’re excited to be playing the tune.If you had a mic-recorded acoustic guitar with lots of air and warm sound it would be so much better than the brittle pickup sound –it’s a really solid part though.
