Song: Now You’re Free
Reviewer: Elliott Ranney
Positive Comments: I think this song plays well in an urban market. The drums/bass drip with funk. The sax is sinewy and mixed just behind the vocal. I like the language this cat uses. The vocalist is excellent, perfect for the group. Sings with confidence, sort of reminds me of the music Chaka Khan/EW&F.
Constructive Comments: Lyrics are tough to write and I don’t feel qualified to speak to them here, even though I am a lyricist too, I am more of an intuitive writer. What I sense, is a lack of a story/what is being written about. This is not a singer/songwriter wearing your heart on your sleeve with too may verses. I know to catch the attention, jump out with a strong image that grabs the listener. The first line could set the scene then introduce the character/situation. Easier said than done. This one is in the can and you probably won’t revisit it. I suggest working more on the lyric, taking each line and crafting it till it shines. The music is slick and you guys have that down, no doubt. Every industry person I’ve spoken with comes back to the lyric, the lynch pin. The most challenging part of writing. Keep up the good work!
