Song: In Spite Of All
Reviewer: Elliott Ranney
Positive Comments: I love the piano sound – nice recording – the vocal is strong, range is used very well. The vocal timbre is warm and inviting. The melody is engaging, the most important aspect of a song in my opinion. The singer has great vocal control in the last mode of the piece. Is it her arrangement, dig the way she takes the melody into her upper register and sort of does an altered melody from the main. Well done! The vocal reminds me of the artist that sings: ‘Sweet Dreams are made of These’, cant remember her name
Constructive Comments: I am not well versed with this style of writing. To me it speaks from a deep well of emotion and experience. The piano could have had more dynamics in the performance. The melody keeps repeating itself, in a descending line. Needs a bridge or a chorus vamp after the second verse if just an instrumental vamp, that would make the song more powerful. By having the vocal be the main focus without a musical pause, does not allow the listener to internalize the message before adding even more lyrics. By the last third of the song, I felt overwhelmed by words and had difficulty being present.
