John Walradt

Positive Comments: Whimsical and original, a charming story with nice popping keyboards that bounce like a cricket. I like the “whack” and the narrative at the very end. Lyrically perfect! The story line keeps me interested and takes me back to childhood upon encountering an insect! The instruments are arranged very well with lots of soft interludes and changes. Good narratives like this are hard to beat.

Constructive Comments: Ah, the constructive comments, a good place for my biased thoughts. For a children’s song, I’d shorten it a little to keep their interest. I’d probably use simpler instrumentation. Instrumentally, it sounds like it could be on an adult contemporary album you’d wind down on after a night out, which, I have to say that I like it a lot! I can’t say I’m an expert on kids music but I usually take the Carpenter’s “Sing” as a base…after all, it was originally used for Sesame Street…and that really dates me. I wasn’t thrilled with the recent “Baby Shark” which was immensely popular, but also simple. “Cricket” has a very good melody and lyrics, and to me that’s 90 percent of the song. Everything else is embellishment and interpretation. Should you decide to experiment, always keep the original!
