Broadjam Artist: Jenny McGregor
Song: Wake Up

Reviewer: John Walradt

Positive Comments: You have a very good melody with a punchy tempo and beat and a lot of energy. The electric guitar compliments it well. The melody stands on its own well enough that it could be played with a single acoustic guitar and voice. Nice slow break in the middle, like the structure of “Carry On” by Stephen Stills, which adds interest to the melody and arrangement. Lyrically a terrific anthem and wake up call that has universal appeal: who hasn’t been fed up from being caged by society’s expectations and wanting the fulfillment in life that everyone else enjoys? Time to break the chains! If only the rest of the world would come to its senses and see the light!

Constructive Comments: This is where I put my own personal preferences and bias, which doesn’t really have a place in my ratings. This is probably just nitpicky. I always wonder how to get away from phrases that sound like a cliche like, “I’m doing it for me!” One I’ve used is “I can’t take another day…” Well, there’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s a quirk with me to try to find different words to say the same thing. I still say a catchy melody with words that capture the feeling of it is the real base of a great song, and that’s what you know how to do.
