Positive Comments: This opens up sounding very much like Ryan Adams’ “New York, New York”. This sounds better with each listen. Really really strong writing in terms of structure, melody, and lyrics. Very nice vocal performance. I really like the chord lift on the pre chorus–it’s a great setup for the chorus/refrain.

Constructive Comments: Listen closely to Ryan Adams’ “New York, New York” for comparison against a masterpiece. First thing drop the effects on the rhythm guitar and go for nice clean, warm sound, and add or substitute and jangly, strumming acoustic guitar part. I think the bass is too plonk plonk plonk in the verses–it sounds like Boston’s “Long Time”, which was 40 years ago. Having it groove and gently move would add a lot. I’d take most of the slapback off the lead vocal, and put some tube drive and just the tiniest bit of distortion in to give it some grit. There’s a bit too much low mid in the vocal–it accentuates the somewhat nasal tone you have. I really don’t like the solo guitar at all. It’s trying to hard, and putting too much Dickie Betts intensity. And the sound is harsh. Simpler, major pentatonic with a smooth tone would be better. All IMO and all intended to help with the tune. This is really solid writing, playing, and singing!

Positive Comments: Playful and bouncy country thingie, pleasantly acoustic, and acoustically pleasant. Pleasant female voice and pleasant banjo. Did I say pleasant?

Constructive Comments: Maybe just a little shorter, but not, it’s just me, of course, impatiently impatient.

Wasted Days by Richard Walker

Positive Comments: It just hit me–this sounds like a lost Traffic tune!! The vocals remind me of Nick Drake too. That groove is a classic Traffic beat, and of course you’ve got both killer piano work and organ in there. Love the vocal timbre, vocal phrasing & melody, Wurlitzer electric, acoustic piano, organ and slinky drum beat, all of which are really well engineered too. Excellent lyrics. I really dig this –nice work!

Constructive Comments: I’d drop the acoustic alone part of the intro–the acoustic guitar sound is a bit “piezo”, and I don’t like the lead guitar lines that you pickup with because it’s got a happy, jam band sound that doesn’t fit with the mood that dominates most of the tune. I’d really like to hear you rework it starting right out with the keys. And get away from bang-dang-a-lang quitar strum rhythm that’s more Greatful Dead. I think the bass could drive the beat a bit more working close with the drums instead of following along after the beat. This would a tremendous amount of energy I bet. Nice work!

Praising The Lord by Randal Dunkle

Song: Praising The Lord

Reviewer: Jeff Roberts

Positive Comments: Nice harmonic work!! Of course this is Randal singing in faith. Interesting story lyrics that bring a lot of gospel events, which makes it more complex and interesting than a lot of Christian Rock.

Constructive Comments: The vocals are too dry &close and much louder than the rest of the tracks, so it gives a bit of a voiceover effect. If you push the vocals back in level, record a bit farther from the mic, and add some reverb it will let the vocal sit in the mix better.

Positive Comments: Way slinky minor Blues feel here with some Jazz elements. Love the drums and atmospheric keys. There’s some really hot and interesting lead work that’s kinda Gary Moore school.

Constructive Comments: I’d take the flange of the guitar–to my ears it’s too harsh and effect driven. But keep that overdrive in. A cleaner tone would really let this sing. Check out some Robben Ford for a reference to exactly what I’m gettin at!
