To Be With You by Nigel Barrett

Positive Comments: I like the groove and the sort of retro feel of the instrumentation – I get a mid 80’s vibe from it. Nice sounding vocals and good recording and mixing as well!

Constructive Comments: It seems like there’s something missing…the hook doesn’t really grab me. I know that sounds subjective, but maybe add some hooky element in the verse, like some rhythm that grabs the listener. The chorus is nice, and maybe adding something like percussion or a more driving keyboard sound could give it some extra oomph.

Positive Comments: This sounds like a smooth jazz song to me. It has some cool groove between the bass and drums, and there’s a good variety of sounds throughout. As someone told me about one of my songs, this has some “good bones”, or plenty of potential, in my opinion.

Constructive Comments: Although the instrumentation works well, the quality of sounds needs to be upgraded – maybe use live drums, and upgrade the organ and piano sounds. Maybe lengthen it as well? Either a more substantial B section, or add a C section.

Positive Comments: This is a nice upbeat song with some cool harmonies.

Constructive Comments: I hear a stray note starting at 2:02 on the Gm chords – it sounds like a Db to me, not positive. Overall, I think the keyboard sounds could work in the right environment, but the arrangement sounds dated to me. The end also sounds unnecessarily long. I know vocals are a personal thing, so I don’t want to be harsh, but it sounds like you’re trying to sing a little above your range. It sounds as if the heavy reverb is intentional. If so, I would look at the mix and try to create space for that. As it is, it’s covering up the keyboard texture.
